Common Relationships

1. Family Relationships
   1. Prologue: Issues Regarding Getting Married
      • Unmarried people can be fully devoted to the Lord
      • Do not marry outside of God’s people
      • A person should have only one spouse
      • Remarriage and adultery
   2. Spouses
      • A husband and wife should be as one
      • Husbands should love their wives
      • Wives should submit to their husbands
      • Do not commit adultery
      • Avoid divorce
   3. Parents’ Duties to Children
      • Parents should love their children
      • Parents should care for their children
      • Parents should discipline their children
      • Parents should teach their children about God and his deeds, inspiring them to trust and obey God
   4. Children’s Duties to Parents
      • Children are to honor their parents
      • Children are to obey their parents
      • Children should heed their parents’ teaching
      • Children are to help their parents

2. Civil Relationships
   1. Citizens’ Duties to Authorities
      • Citizens should submit to and obey the governing authorities
      • For authorities are established by God and punish wrongdoers
      • But citizens should defy commands that conflict with God’s will
   2. Authorities’ Duties to Citizens
      • Authorities should act and rule according to God’s ways
      • Authorities should rule as servants of God and their people
      • Authorities should rule wisely
      • Authorities should rule justly
      • Authorities should defend the needy
   3. Servants and Masters
      • Servants should be obedient, submissive and respectful
      • Servants should be trustworthy and faithful
      • Masters must treat servants justly
      • Masters must not withhold servants’ wages
